“Women read comics. Anyone at all engaged in social media knows this. Women read comics and are a driving force behind fandom. I think I could call them the driving force behind fandom and put up a convincing argument. Just think about it: what fandoms have driven America crazy in the last decade? Could anyone dissuade me from saying that they were Harry Potter, Twilight and the Hunger Games? “Avatar” may have put butts in theater seats, but you don’t hear about it… ever. No one is immersed in the world of “Avatar” except James Cameron and people who enjoy wearing Na’vi Zentai suits. “The Avengers” was pretty darn huge and, if Tumblr is any indication, a whopping portion of the people driving that fandom online do not possess a Y chromosome. Women engage in fandom to levels that men do not. When women get behind something, their sheer numbers and passion force it into the mainstream. That’s why you can name the actor who plays that werewolf kid in “Twilight” and probably sing at least the chorus to one Justin Bieber song. What do tween boys like? I have no clue. Sports? Probably sports.”

So I noticed the updates to The Avengers Second Screen App today and of course I went right for the newly opened Phil Coulson personal file.

Upper left hand corner. They list him as ‘Inactive’. Not deceased. Not terminated. ‘Inactive’.

At first glance the ‘Inactive’ tag makes sense. But…

Review: The Bourne Legacy: Two Thumbs Up …

I’ve been looking forward to this movie ever since I started reading about it, particularly since I knew Jeremy Renner was going to take up the franchise. Admittedly, I had a hard time picturing Matt Damon as an action hero, so I avoided the first three movies. I am familiar with the books, however, so I knew enough of the background not to be lost. If you have no idea what the franchise is about, you might be confused at a few of the elements, particularly at the beginning of the movie, but you’ll catch up.

Basically, the government is developing genetically enhanced soldiers/agents. Jason Bourne, as the ad says, was just the tip of the iceberg. There was never “just one.” Jeremy Renner’s character, Aaron Cross, began as a nobody whose IQ scores had to be adjusted to fit an Army recruiter’s quota. When he is nearly killed by an IED, he is ‘saved’ by the CIA (or a comparably shady government agency) and enlisted in “the program.”

His job is to be a “Sin Eater”, that is somebody for whom the means justify the end. The goal is to develop a soldier/agent without guilt or mercy or compunction. The problem is that Aaron Cross has all of those qualities.

Renner brings those vulnerabilities into play as Aaron Cross. Fear, compassion, guilt, rage … he lets all those emotions show in his portrayal. He is <i>always</i> thinking, always trying to stay one step ahead of the people who want him dead — people who he had trusted, and who have now betrayed him.

Forced into dependency on a chemical cocktail to keep him at a physical and mental peak, he is terrified that he will slip back into the man he was before. He rescues and then goes on the run with a government scientist, Rachel Weisz, who has the key to keep him from regressing.

Weisz goes from being a terrified victin to being Cross’s protector as he needs to depend on her for his life. They make a good team.

As far as the movie goes — well, it won’t knock-your socks off, but it is a great diversion. After so many movies with aliens and monsters being the villains, it was almost refreshing to deal with ordinary people as the bad guys. Edward Norton and Stacy Keach make you dislike them for their abuse of power and lack of moral center. To them, Aaron Cross is a weapon, not a human being.

Everybody is alive at the end of the movie, which bodes well for a sequel.

Jeremy Renner did most of his own stunts, including some fancy motorcyle riding in Manila. The chase scene was thrilling, but I would have liked to have more background on the training and the medical alterations that turned Kenneth Kitson, a less than brilliant Army recruit, into Aaron Cross. Those scenes were hinted at in the trailers, and I’m hoping they’ll be included in the enhanced DVD when it is released.

So … yes, go see The Bourne Legacy. Jeremy is gorgeous, compelling, and definitely sexy as Aaron Cross. The movie will keep you happily munching away at popcorn and on the edge of your seat.
